Feb 15, 2021Learning Curves and Rabbit HolesThis learning project has been a fascinating trip to date. In addition to incremental learning about Python and data science, I have learned a ton about how I work. These lessons have been valuable and transferable to other domains like work. An increased self-awareness in combination with the satisfaction of…3 min read3 min read
Jan 21, 2021#66DaysofData or #N+1DaysofCoding#66DaysofData or #N+1DaysofCoding Before I begin, a note to future self that I am largely enjoying all elements of this learning curve but the documenting of it. I may regret committing this to digital paper, but blogging my learning curve is killing my enthusiasm and momentum with learning. I have committed to documenting…3 min read3 min read
Jan 11, 2021A photo #66DaysofData — Broken streakAnother humbling lesson not provided from the course content I am learning. When learning, especially when learning with a daily commitment over a period of time, it is critical to protect that time or plan for some variance. A DIY project for a family member resulted in a broken streak…2 min read2 min read
Jan 7, 2021#66DaysofData — Day 10Between an equally intense and unexpected surprise at work yesterday morning, which became the opening act to the domestic terrorists attacking Capital Hill, my cognitive levels and attention span were virtually non-existent. As a means to address the stress from the work scenario, I closed my office door and blocked…1 min read1 min read
Jan 6, 2021#66DaysofData — Day 9#66DaysofData — Day 9 No brick walls were hit today. Rather, it felt like a very standard and level day with no peaks and no drops. Just another day of work. I feel like I earned another brick to add to my foundation of learning. Module 2 was an introduction…2 min read2 min read
Jan 5, 2021#66Daysof Data — Day 8Accomplishment: I have maintained the practice of daily coding for a week. I am embarrassed to admit how many challenges I have abandoned in shorter periods of time. Challenge: my original plan exceeded my current knowledge and skill set. Adaptation: Regression to an absolute beginner course. Summary of the day: Short on time, I reviewed the videos from first module of Automate the Boring Stuff with Python in order to begin sketching out a cheat sheet.1 min read1 min read
Jan 4, 2021#66DaysofData — Always be a white beltI believe I first heard this phrase on a fitness podcast. The point of the the saying is to never stop embracing learning and improvement. To not take for granted what you know and/or what you are capable of. I have been thinking about my decision to stop the Kaggle…2 min read2 min read
Jan 2, 2021#66DaysofData1 day win streak and a reassessment After completing the second to last module with the Intro to Python for data science, I have come to a humbling realization. Jan 2, 2021#66DaysofDataThe winning streak came to an end yesterday. New Year’s Day was spent with family outdoors and away from screens. Tomorrow, we start a new streak.1 min read1 min read
Dec 31, 2020#66DaysofData4 day streak. A key lesson learned yesterday about my learning style. Multi-tasking, splitting up the work and learning late at night are not strengths. I read the Booleans module during the day yesterday and saved the exercises for the evening. By the time I sat down to complete the exercises, I lacked the attention to complete them. Despite using every hint and reviewing the module material as well as the work of others, I still couldn’t grasp the questions. Not everyday can be a good day and sometimes you can learn from grinding.1 min read1 min read
